On Thursday, February 25, 2021 (11am SF, 2pm NY, 7pm London, 8pm Berlin) Gradle will host a Webinar featuring VMware entitled: Developer Productivity Engineering in a Microservices Environment — Use Cases & Success Stories from the Trenches.

VMware has adopted Developer Productivity Engineering (DPE) principles within their Cloud Services Platform and deployed Gradle Enterprise to quickly address some of their developer productivity pain points and achieve several benefits.
 
In this webcast, Doron Gold, Staff Engineer at VMware will discuss common use cases where Gradle Enterprise was used successfully in a microservices environment to achieve faster feedback cycles, make troubleshooting more efficient, and improve build and test reliability.

Many of our customers are happily using Gradle Enterprise to make their Maven builds faster and more reliable and to make troubleshooting more efficient. In Gradle Enterprise 2020.5 we added a missing piece to our testing product for Maven: Distributed Testing.

In a recent blog post, Marc Philipp, Principal Software Engineer at Gradle, describes how it is to use Distributed Testing and Build Caching to reduce the total build time for Eclipse Jetty project builds from over 50 minutes to about 15 minutes for a typical code change. He also discusses potential options for reducing build time even further by optimizing the build for Distributed Testing.

On Thursday, January 28 we piloted the first live episode of DevProdEng Showdown. DevProdEng Showdown is a series of live-streamed 30-minute events where a panel of distinguished experts debate hot topics related to Developer Productivity Engineering and Software Engineering at scale, in a rapid-fire game show-like format. 

This episode’s topic was Achieving Java Development Productivity at Scale and the slate of All-Star panelists included Simona Bateman (FitBit), Kyle Moore (LinkedIn); Roberto Perez Alcolea (Netflix); and Hans Dockter (Gradle). Technology is constantly becoming smarter and more powerful. Tim Cochran (Technical Director at ThoughtWorks) observes that as technologies are introduced an organization’s productivity often declines rather than improves. This is because the technology may increase complexities and cognitive overhead to the developer which results in reducing their effectiveness. In this article, the first of a series, Tim introduces a framework for maximizing developer effectiveness. Through research he has identified key developer feedback loops, including micro-feedback loops that developers experience 200 times a day. These should be optimized so they are quick, simple, and impactful for developers. He examines how some organizations have used these feedback loops to improve overall effectiveness and productivity.
